Diabetes : Sick day rules (BD Medical - Diabetes Care)

You will find on this page basic information on diabetes and sick day rules specifically dedicated to people with diabetes.

  • Never stop taking your insulin even if you do not feel well and cannot eat.
  • Measure your blood glucose more frequently, at least 4 times a day and adjust your insulin dose if necessary.
  • If you do not feel like eating solid food, try alternatives like milk, soup, cereals, ice cream, pudding, fruit juice or fizzy drinks to replace your carbohydrate allowance.
  • Try to drink plenty of liquids such as water or sugar free drinks through the day.
  • Frequently test your urine for ketones and glucose as it will give you the first warning of either a lack of insulin or a lack of carbohydrates.
Contact your diabetes clinic or your GP in the following cases:
  • You are vomiting.
  • Your blood glucose level remains high or conversely low.
  • You do not improve quickly.
  • You are unsure about what to do.

Never stop taking your insulin under any circumstances
