The likelihood of developing eye complications is increased the longer a person has diabetes. This is especially true when the diabetes is poorly managed or unbalanced. However, many complications can be avoided and today, the use of modern treatments such as laser can reduce their seriousness.

What are the eye complications related to diabetes?

   
Diabetic retinopathy
Poor circulation in the small blood vessels of the retina leading to eye problem such as:
  • Blurred vision
  • Red veil
  • Eyesight deterioration
   
Cataract
Opacification of the lens resulting in blurred and dull vision.

Glaucoma
Increase in fluid pressure inside the eye resulting in swelling and hardening of the eye.

What treatments are available?
For diabetic retinopathy: laser treatment helps the coagulation of small blood vessels.
Non complicated glaucoma: medication is prescribed in the form of tablets or eye drops.

For the other conditions such as cataract, severe glaucoma, haemorrhage, detachment of the retina, etc. the solution is generally a surgical intervention.
