The beginning Becton Dickinson & Company was born in New Jersey, USA as a result of a fortuitous encounter between Maxwell W. Becton and Fairleigh S. Dickinson during a sale trip in 1897. The two founders of this small thermometer and
syringe company grew their reputation on manufacturing expertise and the guaranty of optimum quality products. They were rapidly able to develop and manufacture their own product lines and to spread the activity of their business. In 1962, BD became a publicly held corporation and was listed in Fortune magazine for the first time as one of the 500 largest American companies in 1970.

BD in the UK is a subsidiary of the United States based medical technology company BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company). BD UK employs over 1 800 associates in the UK and Ireland, including over 150 field-based sales, service and support representatives.
In both UK and Ireland, BD has 7 sites: sales & marketing in Oxford, manufacturing in Plymouth, Swindon & Bidford-on-Avon (UK), Drogheda and Dun Laoghaire (Ireland), accounting & administration in Shannon also in Ireland.
